Workshop Introduction: "SDR Tactical Radio Market Overview, A market report from the Wireless Innovation Forum" presented by David Renaudeau, Thales and Chair of the WInnForum International Tactical Radio Special Interest Group

     3.3.1 National Perspectives

    • "What data, military spectrum managers need from SDR - an Enabling Secure Information Infrastructure (ESII) project prespective" Anil Shukla, David Prior, QinetiQ
    • Finnish SDR Program Status, Mr. Heikki RantanenFinnish Defence Forces Technical Research Defence

Abstract: In this presentation Finnish Defence Forces and Elektrobit give an overview for software Radio research, development and productization activities in Finland.Finnish SDR activities has been started in 90's and regardless of updated and new requirements and technologies main goal of interoperability, portability and cost efficiency has been clear all the time. Finnish Defence Forces has now acquired pilot series for Tactical Wireless IP network, which based on previous SDR development activities and is using also commercial technologies fulfilling military requirements. Tactical Wireless IP network will provide MESH network structure, full compatibility with existing civilian IP networks and mobility for independent nodes in tactical network.

    3.3.2 Waveform Developments

    • "Update on SCA and COALWNW" presented by  Greg Rassatt, Deputy Director, International Programs, JPEO JTRS
    • “NATO Waveforms Providing Coalition Interoperability for Tactical Communications on the Modern Battlefield” , Presented by Phil Vigneron, Communications Research Centre, Canada
      • Capabilities required of modern coalition tactical communications
      • Technological approaches providing solutions (& challenges)
      • Multinational standards activities, and role of SDR
      • Way Forward- implementation and promulgation of technology
      • HDR HF Waveform, Presented by EDA

    12:30 – Lunch and Exhibits

    14:30 –Session 4.3 (Belgium II & III)

4.3.1 Spectrum Aspects of Tactical Communications

    • Presentation by Mr. Mr. Gerard Lapierre, European Defense Agency
    • Presentation by Mr Jean-Pierre Bonin, Alcatel Lucent
    • Presentation by Mr. Serge Basso, NATO

4.3.2 COTS for SDR in Tactical Communications

    • “Experiences for SDR implementation, practical approach”, presented by Mr. Heikki Rantanen,  Finnish Defence Forces Technical Research Defence, and Pekka Heikkinen, Elektrobit

Abstract: In this presentation Finnish Defence Forces and Elektrobit share experiences for waveform portability, information assurance, efficient waveform development and cost effective waveform implementation. Main expectations for SDR in military use has been interoperability and cost savings. To reach these requirements common standardized architecture has seen as enabler. Software Communication Architecture (SCA) is widely accepted baseline for common architecture specification. Main goals for SCA are waveform portability and platform reconfigurability. During Finnish SDR development activities there has identified some specific topics which need to be solved to fulfill expectations. In this presentation some key issues will be covered with some proposals to solve lack of high level architecture specification and reality.

    • “LTE for Public Safety”, presented by Mr. Jerome Brouet, Alcatel-Lucent

    16:00 – Break

    16:15 – Session 5.3 (Belgium II & III)
